Afternoon Parents, Caregivers and Students,
This morning I met with a couple of representatives from Sport Waikato to discuss some ideas and beliefs around sport. Our conversation was centred around the Good Sports Model designed by Sport Waikato. The essence of this model is to ensure that children are active agents in their choice of sport and the messaging that surrounds their experiences, are ones that build their sense of self (efficacy), and in turn their desire to reinvest (agency) in sport / physical activity of their choice. This conversation was an excellent starting point to build on what the beliefs and principles that we share as a school and community around sport are.
While the context was sport and physical activity, it flows into all areas of the child. In particular their learning in the classroom. The messaging we have with our children need to be supported by our actions as parents and teachers. These actions being either our role modelling as learners or the ways in which we sit alongside and support. At times their can be a disconnect between our messaging and our actions, this creates confusion and as adults we can aim to be better.
At all times our moral compass must be driven by supporting children with their efficacy and agency, not matter what the context. It is these behaviours that will set them up for success.
Whether it be learning in the class or learning on the sports field, remember it is always about development not performance. Let's not place adult mindsets on our children, it simply does not end well.
I would like to leave you with this YouTube clip from Sport Waikato. It is 5 minutes long, however, worth it!
30 Jun 2020
2:45 PM to 5:45 PM
July 1 & July 2
This term (Week 10) we will be offering Student Led Conferences (SLC) for all families and children. These conferences replace the ones we missed at the end of last term but will also play a more significant part in our reporting to parent process than previous years. Due to Covid19 we have had to rethink our written reports for this term. It is simply not feasible to provide a written report with the validity that we are normally able to do. This term we will be providing a written report that describes your child's learning behaviours as well as gives you an indication as to their current achievement levels in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. You will receive this at the SLC. In addition, at the SLC your child will showcase to you their Learning Journal (LJ) and examples of learning that reflect their current development.
Due to the added information we aim to offer at these SLC's we have changed the structure slightly. This time around they will be 40 minutes long and shared with only 1 other family per Kaitiaki Teacher (i.e: Roopuu Maahuri will have no more than 8 parents in at any given time).
If you have any questions please feel free to reach out and ask.
